Business insurer, Superscript, spoke to 500 British SME owners to uncover how they spend their time during working hours. Worryingly, a third of small business owners say that they don’t have enough time to carry out all of the admin tasks required during working hours. These admin tasks can range from data entry and bookkeeping to communications and customer relations.

33% of business owners wanted the process of taxes to be more time-effective, while 21% lamented the time taken to hire new staff.

The research also found that employers would ideally like to free up to four hours per day to address tasks but only manage to squeeze in 90 minutes per week.  With an inability to find time for all the daily tasks, 43% of business leaders noted that they take work home.

However, leaders are finding ways to drive efficiencies, and 88% said that technology has helped make business admin a lot easier.

Mai Fenton, CMO for Superscript, summarised the findings of the study: ‘Our research shows that while work admin can be the bane of every business owner, but the majority of small business owners are positive that technology can provide a helping hand in making their business admin chores easier.”

Implementing technology to improve productivity

There are plenty of technology providers that will promise to solve the woes of small business leaders, but making the right decision requires careful consideration. Not only should products be researched, but the adoption of a tool into the business should be considered.

The Help to Grow: Management Course enables business leaders to review their operations, understand why they may need to adopt technology, how to hit strategic priorities, and make sure their business is taking the right safety measures with digital tools.

Additionally, the ‘Digital Transformation’ module guides leaders through the phases of digital adoption and how to analyse progress against the Six ‘Ps’ Marketing Model which is a tried and tested model used to assess the marketing campaigns of SMEs and enterprises alike. There are also examples of how technology has been used in businesses across a variety of sectors.

The results of the course can vary from making hires with greater confidence to implementing technology that transforms operations and gives time back to leaders.

Technology undoubtedly helps businesses become more effective, but it’s worth analysing and discussing what works best for your business before you invest. The Help to Grow: Management Course enables business leaders to make more informed decisions.
