Despite being called Monty Miracle, the Yorkshire-based cleaning solution company was born out of years of experience and hard work. Martin Beaumont founded Monty Miracle in 2015 after 45 years in the cleaning industry.

His mission was simple: create a patio and outdoor cleaning product that was better for the environment, didn’t wear surfaces down and, most importantly, cleaned effectively.

Martin’s nephew, Peter Beaumont, had been interested in the company since its inception, helping with licensing. As the aspirations for the company developed, he became a full-time member of the business as a Company Director to work alongside Martin but the family duo found themselves working far more in the business than they expected.

Peter explains: “Both Martin and myself were getting increasingly sucked into the business as the business began to take off, and it was becoming very high pressure for us and our small team as we tried to fill orders out of a garage.

“An advisor, Barney Mynott, from the Federation of Small Businesses was helping us manage this stressful situation and recommended the Help to Grow: Management Course.”

Joining Help to Grow: Management

Peter started the Help to Grow: Management Course with Huddersfield Business School.

“I have always loved learning. I like meeting people. I like talking to people. I like knowing people's stories. The networking opportunities combined with the knowledge I would gain made signing up for the Help to Grow: Management Course an easy choice.”

Within the first couple of weeks, he was able to implement learnings into the business.

Lessons from the course

Peter had already begun thinking about how he could develop online sales for Monty Miracle, and the course helped him crystallise these ideas.

Digital Marketing

“During the course, we talked about how powerful social media is and so I started looking at our business and seeing what we could do. I realised our product is very easy to illustrate visually, so I began to make videos.

The structure of Bowman and Faulkner’s ‘Strategic Clock’ marketing model which helps with market placement, helped Peter position the product for consumers and the company is now expanding its audience internationally.

Organisational Design

Peter also saw a need to change how the business was being run. This was emphasised after the success of the social media campaign.

“The amount of comments and messages we were getting on the back of our videos meant that managing our social media was taking up most of my day.”

Social media alongside the fulfilment of orders led Peter to look at how hiring could help the business moving forward. The Help to Grow: Management Course offered financial guidance on how to make an internal finance checklist and how to conduct a break-even analysis so Peter was secure in the decisions he was making.

“I was going through every single order and printing each label one by one, which meant that I was working 18 hours a day. After the course, we improved the process and scaled up the team to meet demand.”

Having the right number of people to process orders allowed Peter to return to the bigger picture and the results speak for themselves.

The company's headcount grew from 5 to 7

Turnover increased by 362%

After the Help to Grow: Management Course, Peter saw the team grow from 5 to 7 people. This includes a logistics hire who has helped the company make its shipping processes more affordable. As a result of the changes, Monty Miracle also saw turnover increase by a staggering 362%.

The company’s products are now due to be sold in Canada and the United States and are already sold by some major online retailers. If that wasn’t enough, the company is also looking to rebrand to help on-board even more physical stores.

Reflecting on the course and its impact, Peter says: “I'd highly recommend it to any business leader in any industry. I met friends and people who want to make sure you have the tools to succeed. It helped Monty Miracle grow incredibly quickly.

“I enjoyed it so much that I convinced my daughter to enrol on the course. She recently joined our business as soon as she graduated from her Law degree, and I knew that Help to Grow: Management would help her develop.”

The growing family business now looks to have its eyes set on a cleaning product that will be available across the world.
