Smart Contracts in Construction: True collaboration and real change at last?

Law and management were traditionally separate disciplines in the construction sector until the advent of a new approach. The realisation that law and management could co-exist has driven contractual developments in the last twenty plus years dating from the Latham and Egan agenda. The next breakthrough in the field is likely to involve the connection of law, management and technology. UWE Bristol is ideally placed to provide thought leadership and research in respect of this paradigm shifting development.

Dr Jim Mason's recent paper entitled 'Intelligent Contracts in the Construction Industry' is the first in a series of research projects scoping out the potential of these initiatives. Examining barriers to implementation and prevailing stakeholder attitudes are also crucial in envisioning this departure for construction and engineering contracts.

Purpose of the event

This event is designed to launch the collaboration between industry and UWE Bristol in the field of smart contracts. UWE Bristol wishes to establish that it is 'open for business' in terms of research and development for attracting projects and funding. A key outcome is the attainment of its partners' goals in terms of what is possible.

The benefits of attending the launch include the following:

  • Being part of the dynamic movement promoting smarter contracts
  • Defining the key issues/concerns and deliverables in this field
  • Learning about existing technologies in related industries and identifying their transferability
  • Hearing from speakers engaged at the cutting edge of law, management and technology
  • Setting the agenda and timescale for future conferences and events
