Vacancy for Chair of the Small Business Charter Management Board

We welcome expressions of interest in becoming the Chair of the Small Business Charter Management Board.

Chair of the Management Board Scope of Responsibilities, Experience and Knowledge

Please note: the Chair must be independent of any member of the Chartered Association of Business Schools. A list of members can be found here.


  • Chair and participate in quarterly management board meetings
  • Oversee the planning of a programme of activity for each financial year
  • Lead the team ensuring the management board works effectively towards the strategic objectives
  • Work closely with the Executive Director of the Small Business Charter
  • Participate in reviewing the assessor team recommendations for awarding the Charter to university business schools
  • Promote the activities of the Small Business Charter publicly and across professional networks
  • Uphold the governance and ethics of the Small Business Charter, in accordance with the Royal Charter
  • The chair of the management board is not remunerated and is not normally compensated for travel expenses


Experience and knowledge:

  • It is essential that the chair has:
    • proven experience working with or for an SME
    • proven experience and an appreciation of working with a business school
    • sufficient gravitas to command respect from SME and business school communities
  • It is desirable that the chair has:
    • Experience of working with policy makers
    • An understanding of wider university – business school collaboration
    • An understanding of regional and national economic development in relation to SMEs
