Update on Charter Awards and Consultations

The Small Business Charter team have been very busy since July and we are delighted to share this update on our latest award plans and consultations.

Small Business Charter Awards:

Assessor teams are supporting new Charter assessments throughout September and we are preparing to table the assessor recommendations at the Management Board meeting on the 28 October.

We also have some Charter upgrade applications to be considered at the October board meeting.

Uptake in the Charter award remains strong and we are delighted to be working with many business schools progressing through the process.

Regional Charter Business School Working Groups:

We have now completed the four regional working groups with the Charter award holding business schools and we are in the process of sharing the outcomes. These detailed effective discussions will inform the Small Business Charter’s strategy going forward.

Small Business Charter Engagement:

Business School Visits

We have continued to engage with our Charter business schools, and potential Charter business schools, visiting a number of business schools / HEIs during July, August and September.

This includes the following schools:

  • University of the West of Scotland
  • University of Lancaster
  • Heriot Watt University
  • Nottingham Trent University
  • Birmingham City University
  • Manchester Metropolitan University
  • University of Coventry
  • University of Cumbria
  • University College London
  • London Metropolitan University

Please do make contact if there are topics you would like to discuss face-face.

Enterprise Educators UK:

We are pleased to recognize Enterprise Educators (EEUK) as a valued partner for the Small Business Charter. EEUK personnel represent a third of every Charter award assessment team which also includes one senior academic and an SME representative. We look forward to continue to work with EEUK and our other partners to promote and assess Charter business schools. EEUK are now listed as a partner on the About Us page of the website.

Exploratory Discussions, Consultations & Collaborations:

Exploratory Start-Up Programme

The Small Business Charter, NACUE, NCEE, and UCL (as the HEI representative) recently submitted a proposal for HEFCE Catalyst funding relative to a HE Start-Up programme. The HEFCE scrutiny panel provided some feedback and invited an updated application in the October timeframe.

The partners are finalising a revised proposal and we will keep you informed how this develops.

Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE)

HIE released four public tenders to support SME leadership & management and mentoring.

The SBC discussed these opportunities with the 4 Scottish Charter Business Schools. Preliminary expressions of interest have been submitted to these competitive tenders.
